Britain’s biggest tennis tournament!
Will British fans finally get their winner?
This week the world’s best tennis players are in England for the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. The championships began 123 years ago and are now regarded as one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments.
Last year’s winners were Rafael Nadal and Venus Williams but this year Nadal is out of action due to a knee injury.
So without Nadal around to defend his title, who could become this year’s champion and net the €1 million prize money?
British people have their hopes pinned on Andy Murray. He is Britain’s best tennis player and is seeded third in the world. The last time a British man won Wimbledon was 1936, so the Brits feel they are long overdue a win!
Andy Murray says, “I think I have a chance of winning but I understand how difficult that is to do. It’s very easy to say, ‘Rafael’s not playing, Andy’s got a much easier route to the final.’ I don’t view it like that at all.”
About 480,000 spectators are expected to descend on Wimbledon for this year’s championships. Many of them will enjoy eating and drinking some traditional Wimbledon treats – strawberries and cream or Pimms and lemonade.
Who do you think will win Wimbledon this year?
